AAUW
Hosts Meet the Candidates Night for HASD School Board Candidates
PRESS RELEASE FROM 2003 PROGRAM
The
Huntingdon Branch of the American Association of University
Women (AAUW) will sponsor a Meet The Candidates Night for the
Huntingdon Area School Board candidates on Wednesday, May 14,
from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Smithfield Township Fire Hall. The
community is invited to attend.
Five Seats on the School Board are up for election this year. All candidates
who have filed nominating petitions at the Huntingdon County Courthouse have
been formally invited to participate
Persons who plan on running write-in campaigns for the primary election scheduled
for May 20, 2003, are also welcome to participate in the Meet The Candidates
Night. So that AAUW can effectively plan the event, persons who would like
to participate as write-in candidates must contact the AAUW.
The candidates fot the two open seats in Region 1 of the Huntingdon Area School
District are James C. Brown, K. Michael Honstine, and Dr. Ronald A. Long. One
Seat is available in Region 2, with Donna K. G. Isenberg running unopposed.
Region 3 also has two open seats and the candidates are David Christian Berger
and Peter D. Rothstein. Persons who are interested in running for election
as write-in candidates are encouraged to participate as well.
The program will be open with a welcom from the AAUW Co-President Elizabeth
Traverse, who will also introduce the candidates. Well-known county historian
Nancy Shedd will preside as moderator for the program.
Each candidate has been provided with two advanced questions. The meeting will
open with the candidates responses to these questions:
Question 1: What do you think are the primary responsibilities of
a member of the Huntingdon Area School District Board of Directors?
Question 2: How do you define educational excellence and how would you balance
educational excellence with fiscal responsibility?
After presenting their views on these two questions, the candidates
will then recieve questions from the audience. At the end of the forum,
each candidate will be given the oppurtunity to present closing remarks.
This is a good oppurtunity for the Huntingdon Area residents to determine where
the candidates stand on issues facing the district. Communtity members are
encouraged to come and pose their questions directly to the candidates.
In principle and practice, AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership. There
shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis
of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, and disability.
AAUW membership is open to all graduates who hold a baccalaureate or higher
degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Student affiliate
memberships are also open to any enrolled students. |
